Tenerife is the most populous of the seven Canary islands, with a population of more than 900 000 people. It is also one of the top destinations for tourism in the world. Tenerife has great beaches, nature and large cities, like Santa Cruz, and an amazing climate. Despite its proximity to Africa the Canary islands are still considered a part of Spain, meaning that the Spanish cannabis laws apply. Here is our guide to weed in Tenerife.
Cannabis laws in Spain
The Spanish laws regarding marijuana are very unique and some of the most liberal in all of Europe. Possession of small quantities of weed, meant for personal use is considered a misdemeanor. What this means is than even if caught with weed on you, you will face a fine at most, though if you only have a few grams, the police will probably just confiscate the weed.
Cannabis can legally be cultivated and consumed in private spaces. This has allowed, through legal loopholes for cannabis clubs to open. These clubs are similar to a coffee shop in Amsterdam, but only the members of the club are allowed in.
Where to get weed in Tenerife
Similarly to other Spanish cities, getting weed in Tenerife is not very hard. If you walk around a popular tourist spot, where they sell sunglasses, bracelet etc. you will likely get asked if you want to buy weed. If not, simply ask the people selling the stuff. Another strategy, better suited for night time, is to ask the promoters of clubs. They are often young students, who smoke themselves and can usually hook you up with decent quality weed or hash. In Tenerife the quality of the hash is usually better than the weed and hash is cheaper too. Hash is about 4-5 euros a gram and weed is about 7-8. Dealers will most likely try to rip you off, so you are expected to haggle.
